The Sacrament of Baptism

“And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him: And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”

“The first of the seven sacraments, and the “door” which gives access to the other sacraments. Baptism is the first and chief sacrament of forgiveness of sins because it unites us with Christ, who died for our sins and rose for our justification. Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist constitute the “sacraments of initiation” by which a believer receives the remission of original and personal sin, begins a new life in Christ and the Holy Spirit, and is incorporated into the Church, the Body of Christ. The rite of Baptism consists in immersing the candidate in water, or pouring water on the head, while pronouncing the invocation of the Most Holy Trinity: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit” (977, 1213 ff.; 1275, 1278).

Celebration

Infant baptisms are celebrated during weekend Mass, except when it is necessary to schedule individually.  Baptisms do not take place during Lent.  Parents are strongly encouraged to make arrangements before the birth of their child.

Preparation class for parents

Required if this is your first child or

it has been more than three years since you’ve had a child baptized.

Please contact Sister Lucy for preparation class details and registration.

Requirements for parents:

  •  Parents must be active, registered members of St. John Vianney Parish.
  • It is expected that, minimally, they participate regularly in Mass on the Lord’s Day and holy days of obligation.

Requirements for godparents:

  • Godparents must be at least 16 years old.
  • If there is only one godparent, he or she must be a Catholic in good standing with the Church.
  • If there are two godparents, there must be one male & one female. At least one must be a Catholic. The other may be a non-Catholic witness as long as he or she is a baptized Christian.
  • Any Catholic who serves as a godparent must be confirmed.
  • Any person who serves as a godparent or witness should be actively practicing his or her faith.
  • We will need to receive written verification from the church of one of the Catholic godparents that he or she is a Catholic in good standing and meets all the above requirements. Please have it sent to the attention of Sister Lucy Phung at least one month prior to the baptism.
